The Long March and Bush Aid Charity Ball

Thank you to all our customers who helped our “Long March” - a Matt Irwin Photography initiative where, during March, we set aside 10% of sales at the miGallery in Flinders Lane to be donated to the Red Cross for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund. Buying joy for your wall helped donate some joy for our fellow Victorians whose lives have changed so dramatically. Thank you, thank you.

In addition to this, Matt Irwin donated one of his key works which was auctioned at Bush Aid Charity Auction Fundraising Ball held at the Melbourne Town Hall on the 13th March 2009. The funds raised during this brilliant event went to the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation Bushfire Appeal 2009. Go to www.lmcf.org.au for details.

Well, well, well. What a compliment to have made it into the pages of the famously impartial Lonely Planet Guide to Melbourne & Victoria and it took a guy from Chicago to tell us that is how he found out about Matt Irwin. See us on Page 120. And not to mention the Author’s pick entry on the Lonely Planet website...

I don’t want to moan about the economic conditions however attempting to change the big picture means we have to appreciate our part, no matter how small a player you may be. Our power as individuals will be in the small things that each of us can do which will collectively influence the big picture somewhere along the line. What we can say for certain is that the big picture is influencing us right now and it is at least telling us to be more conscious of how we’ve been doing things, to think a little bit harder about the consequences of our behaviour because collectively we created this big picture. The brilliant thing about a world economic crisis is it gets millions of people rethinking how we’ve done things at the same time. What an opportunity for a paradigm shift! Time to restabilise our behaviour into something more sustainable and manageable.

One of the “small things” that Matt Irwin Photography is doing to embrace the paradigm of sustainability and manageability is to ensure we don’t go off-shore to create our products. We strongly believe that our ‘Made in Melbourne by Melbournians’ initiative is more than a marketing catch cry or a cute philosophy, it is immensely valuable - to society, to the community, to the environment and to our economy. It taps into the strong human instinct of looking after your kin, your neighbour, your tribe and local resources. We’ll keep producing Matt Irwin artworks in-house despite the cheaper Chinese alternatives. We’ll keep printing our cards and calendars down the road, supporting a local Melbourne printing business. We’ll ensure that the transport miles are minimised to keep our environmental impact as low as possible. And if you dear people, believe in the ethic of ‘Made in Melbourne by Melburnians’ then you’ll know that buying our products will help us keep Melburnians employed and active participants in our local economy.

Economic downturns don’t solve themselves by inaction. Act consciously, everything you buy has a far reaching effect. Read the labels, what you buy is also a moral decision. Support your local business above all - you’ll be doing all of us a favour - including yourself.

And remember this when our Government hands out the latest stimulus package. The spirit of this hand-out is to stimulate OUR ECONOMY so think before you buy. Buying imports means our economy misses out and you miss out. Make our economy (and environment) your priority in your buying decisions.

So in the spirit of Bob and Barack, miGallery at no. 4, 239 Flinders Lane (aka Scott Alley) grows into an amazing space.
